About Co-op Pay

Financial services that do more than facilitate transactions

Through the Co-op Pay SACCO and associated services, the wider model aims to support member participation, savings, credit access and payments within an appropriately governed cooperative framework.

The guiding principle is that financial services should help members participate in economic activity and enable productive enterprises to reach customers and suppliers.

Core service areas

  • Member accounts and financial participation — support the onboarding of eligible members and access to available cooperative financial services through the relevant membership and verification processes.
  • Savings and collective saving — support appropriate savings products and organised group-saving arrangements where offered by the relevant institution and permitted by its operating framework.
  • Responsible credit — provide pathways for eligible members and businesses to apply for financing, subject to affordability assessment, eligibility, available funding and the applicable credit policy.
  • Digital payments — support authorised payment and settlement processes for eligible transactions, subject to available payment infrastructure and applicable requirements.
  • Cooperative commerce financing — explore financing arrangements that enable eligible members and businesses to purchase goods and services from participating cooperative enterprises.
  • Member economic participation — connect financial services with the wider cooperative network so that members can participate as savers, customers, producers, entrepreneurs and contributors to cooperative development.

How Co-op Pay fits into the ecosystem

A cooperative producer may need finance to expand production. A supplier may need a reliable settlement process. A cooperative member may need an eligible credit facility to purchase essential goods or business inputs.

Co-op Pay aims to connect relevant financial services to these needs while operating within the responsibilities of the institution providing each service.

The objective is to create practical connections between member financial participation and cooperative enterprise growth.

Institutional distinction

Financial product availability, eligibility, interest rates, fees and regulatory permissions must be confirmed with the responsible institution. The roles of Co-ops Africa, CDEx, Co-op Pay SACCO and any partner bank, payment provider or other regulated institution are distinct and are stated separately.
